Margaret Spencer receives her life membership badge from the Australia Hereford Society presented by Vice President Keith Miles and pictured with her son Adrian Spencer and Lot 8 Ironbark Neon B220. |
Bulls sold to a seasonal high of $30,000 for all-breeds at the 35th annual Ironbark Hereford stud of the Spencer family, Barraba, NSW where 153 bulls sold from the 198 offered.
The bulls averaged a very respectable $5163.
Many repeat buyers from five states secured new sires for their operations at the sale.
The $30,000 high selling bull was one of the first sons of the exciting new Canadian sire GH Neon 17N to be offered in Australia, the bull, Ironbark Neon B220, a rising two year old, was purchased by repeat buyers, Noel and Liz Cook, “Kindon Station”, Goondiwindi for their extensive cattle operation which comprises 3500 cows.
Mr Cook said the bull displayed tremendous carcase merit and growth for age, he weighed 929kg and scanned 129 sq cm of eye muscle area (EMA) and was still under two years of age and this performance was reflected in the estimated breeding values (EBV’s) in breedplan with an EMA EBV of 3.4,a retail beef yield (RBY) of 1.5p.c. and plus 127 for 600 day weight.
In total, the Cook’s purchased seven bulls at the sale for an average of $12,571.
The steers bred on their aggregation are finished for on grass and crops for the Jap Ox trade with some sold as feeder steers.
Mr Cook said he was very pleased with his purchases and said the bulls were very good value and he would quickly recover the cost with the increased weight gain and muscle content of the steers bred while the value of the retained heifers in the herd could not be underestimated he said.
Second top price of $20,000 was paid by Geoff Larsen and family, Hylands Hereford stud, Cootamundra.
They purchased an 18 month old son of GH Neon 17N weighing 757kg with EBV for EMA of 2.9 and 0.6 for intra muscular fat (IMF) or marbling.
Geoff Larsen said the bull had an outstanding pedigree, being from females carrying the blood of Vena Park Jackpot and BP Extra 203U.
“His growth and weight for age and exceptional length through the loin is incredible and should be one hell of a bull at maturity” Mr Larsen commented.
The Hylands stud comprises some 200 registered breeders and they would make their sale debut at the Hereford national show and sale at Wodonga next year.
Manager of Raby Hereford and Merino stud, Warren, Ashley Bell purchased two stud sires at the sale at $16,000 and $12,000.
The $16,000 bull was a 24 month old son of the Canadian sire, LCI TW Pepper 1L and bred from a daughter of Bramble Kurrajong while the $12,000 purchase was a 26 month old son of Ironbark K086 Kurrajong T300 and from a dam carrying the blood of Starfire 61 and BP 55C Britisher 1M.
Mr Bell said he appreciated the structural soundness of both bulls and their outstanding pedigrees with their tremendous bone combined with great carcase merit and natural doing ability.
The Raby herd comprises 550 Hereford cows which includes 100 registered breeders while the whole operation includes 9000 Merino sheep with 2000ha of crop also farmed annually.
The Hereford herd at Raby has only seen Ironbark bulls utilized since its establishment.
From Tasmania, Peter Boland and family, Nara Pastoral Holdings, Burnie again returned to the sale and this year they snapped up nine bulls at an average of $6900 after paying to a top of $14,000.
This was for a two year old bull sired by Ironbark M248 Hot Shot Y082.
The Boland family runs a herd of 700 pure Ironbark Hereford breeders producing steers which are sold to feedlots and grass finishers.
Peter Boland said he looks for bulls with dams of exceptional milking ability while the bulls must have natural doing ability and tremendous carcase merit but overall they must have softness.
Mr Boland said he had purchased several years ago some older Ironbark Hereford bulls to use over a small mob of some 60 Angus cows and the calves they reared were quite exceptional in every respect and proved to Mr Boland that was the way to breed black baldies.
Warwick and Sophie Cooper, “Donnabar”, Wallumbilla, Qld., took home six bulls at an average of $4000 for use in their herd of 750 Hereford cows which are finished in feedlots for the Jap Ox grain fed market.
Bruce and Steven King, “Eulourie”, Upper Horton again made their presence felt at the sale when they bid $14,000 for their selection of a rising two year old son of Ironbark Kurrajong T300.
The King’s are repeat buyers of many years standing at Ironbark and conduct their own annual on-property weaner sale in autumn.
Jack and Stewart Hicks, Running Creek via Wodonga, Vic., snapped up 10 bulls at an average of $3500 for use in their high quality Hereford herd which sees the bulk of their production sold at an annual weaner sale on the property.
Robert and Scott Reid, Reid Trust, Howlong took home four bulls, paying to a top of $10,000 they averaged $6250, the steers bred are grown out and then sold to feedlots for finishing for the supermarket and restaurant trade.
The Reid’s have for many years used Ironbark bulls and are more than pleased with the production and quality of the bulls used.
Kelly French, Doogallook Pastoral Co., Yea, Vic., put a floor in the market and snapped up 12 bulls at an average of $3375.
The company runs 1200 pure Ironbark Hereford breeders, the steers are either grown out and finished on irrigation country or are sold as weaners as seasonal conditions dictate.
The Bishop family, Bando Station, Mullaley, also repeat buyers of Ironbark bulls, purchased four bulls at an average of $6625 for use in their pure Hereford herd which sees the steers bred finished on crops and grain for various markets.
Murray Woods, “Rockwell”, Warialda took home four bulls at an average of $5875 while Robsar Pty Ltd., “Borambil Park”, Condobolin purchased five bulls at average of $4600.
Bill Newton, general manager of FS Falkiner and Sons Pty Ltd., “Boonoke”, Deniliquin purchased five bulls at an average of $5700 to use in the companies drought affected herd.
Another repeat buyer of many years standing to secure new sires at the sale was Jim Clifton, Hillgrove”, Purlewaugh and this year selected six bulls at an average of $3333.
Michael Hickey, “Hill Park”, Armidale outlaid a total of $12,500 for his selection of three bulls to use in his herd of Hereford breeders while Tony Haggerty’s The Glen Rural Pty Ltd., Linton Station, Barraba outlaid $17,000 for two bulls.
Campbell and Kerry Anne Tonkin, CTK Cattle Co., “Tumlong”, Barraba took home eight bulls at an average of $4000.
