Ironbark Herefords average $5450 Buyers from five states purchased bulls at the annual Ironbark Hereford bull sale of the Spencer family, Barraba.

A total of 170 bulls sold from the 200+ offered at the sale, top price of $13,000 was paid twice and the sale averaged $5450.

Tough seasonal conditions in the Riverina and southern Queensland prevented many buyers from attending or purchased less bulls due to reduced cow numbers. Noel and Liz Cook, “Kindon Station”, Goondiwindi, Qld., purchased the first bull to sell at $13,000.

The bull, a 24 month old son of the Canadian sire, CH 64K Northstar 35N, one of the first by this new sire to be offered, weighed 982kg and had a scanned eye muscle area (EMA) of 130 sq cm as well as a scanned intra muscular fat reading of 5.7per cent. In total the Cook’s purchased 10 bulls at an average of $5150 for use in their herd of 2000 Hereford breeders and 500 Angus breeders. These bulls will be used over to produce steers which are grown out to 450 to 480 kg before being sold to Beef City at Toowoomba, Qld. Noel Cook said he used Hereford bulls over the Angus cows to get higher weaning and growth rates in the calves and has stuck with Herefords as they give heavier weights at an earlier age and are the cattle with the best temperament.

Edwina Bishop, “Bando Station”, Mullaley also paid the $13,000 top price, her selection was a rising two year old son of the homebred sire, Ironbark K086 Kurrajong T300. He weighed 964kg with a scanned EMA of 129 sq cm and IMF of 6.1per cent. In total Miss Bishop purchased five bulls at an average of $8000. Volume Buyers The French family, Doogalook Pastoral Co., Yea, Vic., purchased 16 bulls to a top of $5000 to average $4031. These bulls will be used in the breeding herd situated in the high country around Yea with the steers grown out and finished on irrigated country on the plains around Wangaratta. McGauran Pastoral Co., Rosedale, Victoria also purchased eight bulls to a top of $9000, twice to average $6500. Jack and Stuart Hicks, “Running Creek”, Dederang, repeat buyers of Ironbark bulls for many years took home seven bulls at an average of $3214 with the steers bred sold at their annual on-property production sale in late summer.

The Cain family, “Selkirk”, Strathdownie, Vic, also repeat buyers, purchased four bulls at an average of $4000 this year. Bluey Commins, Nunniong Hereford stud, Ensay, Vic. outlaid $10,000 for his selection of a 24 month old son of the home bred sire, Ironbark 603 Home Builder X096. he weighed 963kg with a scanned EMA of 123 sq cm and a IMF of 5.5per cent.

Dick Waugh, Kakariki Pastoral, Seymour, Vic took home four bulls at an average of $3875. Regular buyers at the Ironbark sale, the Bolland family, Nara Pastoral Holdings, Burnie, Tasmania paid to a top of $10,000 for the five bulls they purchased which averaged $6500.

Warwick and Sophie Cooper, “Donnabar”, Wallumbilla, Qld., purchased six bulls at an average of $4500 while the Baker family, “Lighthouse”, Wallumbilla snapped up a bargain at $3000.

The Cross family, St George, Qld. outlaid an average of $5000 for the two bulls they purchased with a top price of $7000 for one of the first sons to be offered in Australia by the Canadian sire, SNS 288D Alberta Pioneer 53H. Michael Welsh, J and B Herefords, “Mt Hope”, Coolah successfully bid $13,000 for his selection of a 27 month old son of HH Home Builder 603. He weighed 942kg with an EMA of 127 sq cm with a 6.2 IMF percentage. Mr Welsh said the bull appealed for his length and thickness and overall quality combined with his great figures, both scanned and estimated breeding values (EBV) of plus 3.2 for EMA and plus 19 for milk.

Regular buyers, the King family, “Eulourie”, Upper Horton outlaid $29,000 for three bulls with a top of $11,000 paid twice. Mr King said good bulls are never expensive and the value of the retained heifers can not be estimated. They conduct a regular on-property production sale in autumn and are always among the top prices paid in the season.

First time buyers at the sale were Steve and Matt Merriman, “Ravensworth’, Yass, they outlaid $10,000 for their selection of a 24 month old son of HH Home Builder 603 for use in their herd of some 1000 Hereford breeders. Repeat buyers included the Reid family, “Chudleigh’, Howlong who this year selected five bulls at an average of $6700 after paying to a top of $10,000. Steers bred are grown out before being sold to feedlots for finishing for the heavy export trade.

Chris Waring, “Bulgary Station”, Galore outlaid $12,000 for his selection of a rising two year old son of CH 46K Northstar 35N. In total, Mr Waring purchased four bulls at an average of $8500. Sid Howard, “Calala”, Curlewis paid $10,000 for a son of Ironbark K086 Kurrajong T300 for use in his herd of Hereford breeders. The Wilson family, “The Downs”, Warialda paid $9000 for their selection of a very soft, high performance son of Ironbark 603 Home Builder W347.

Bill Newton, general manager of FSF Falkiner and Sons Pty Ltd., “Boonoke”, Deniliquin needed less bulls this year due to the continuing drought conditions being experienced in the Riverina. Nevertheless he purchased five bulls at an average of $7100 while Chris Bowman, general manger of Uardry Merino stud, Hay purchased two bulls at $6000 each. Selling agents were Elders and Landmark with auctioneers Paul Dooley, Garth Hughes and Mark Barton. Another successful Ironbark Sale.

See you next year.
